BACOLOD City – The city government will implement a car-free Sunday beginning June 9 on Lacson Street in this city.
The Bacolod Traffic Authority Council (BTAC) approved a resolution on this yesterday. BTAC said from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. every Sunday, vehicles are prohibited along the 1.2-kilometer stretch of Lacson Street, or from Ramos North Drive to South Capitol Road.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez told the media that this will be a big contribution to minimize the effects of climate change.
The city mayor added that this scheme also aims to allow pedestrians, joggers and bikers to use the street.
Car-free Sunday, Mayor Benitez said, started in European countries in the year 2000. In Singapore, they revived the scheme in March this year after a four-year hiatus.
In Makati City, Ayala Avenue implemented the car-free Sunday in September last year to promote healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
Due to its successful implementation, it was announced in December 2023 that Ayala Avenue will be car-free every Sunday morning in 2024./PN
