BACOLOD City – The Liga ng mga Barangay vowed support to the city government’s solid waste management efforts.
Liga president Lady Gles Pallen said officials from 61 villages in Bacolod committed to cooperate in the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Pallen – village chief of Taculing – met with the barangay officials over the weekend at the Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall inside the Bacolod City Government Center to discuss the city’s solid waste management program.
The barangay officials have agreed to convene the Barangay Ecological Solid Waste Management Committee (BESWMC).
An election for the committee officials was held, said Pallen.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in its Memorandum Circular No. 2018-112 dated July 12, 2018 called for the reorganization of the BESWMC.
It added that local government units should also create an Ecological Solid Waste Management Committee that will oversee the implementation of ecological solid waste management program at the barangay level.
“With the election of the new set of barangay officials, there is a need to organize or reorganize the BESWMC. We also need to update them on their duties and functions pursuant to RA 9003 and other related policies, laws and issuances,” the DILG said.
Aside from convening the BESWMC, Pallen said they also urged every barangay to have a materials recovery facility for the smooth implementation of the city’s “no segregation, no collection” policy.
Barangay officials were also instructed to conduct an information campaign to raise awareness on solid waste management among their constituents./PN
