MANILA – Ricardo Sueno failed in his bid to become a double champion this year after suffering a unanimous decision loss to IBF Pan Pacific bantamweight champion Anuchai Donsua of Thailand on Wednesday at the Rangsit International Stadium in Thailand.
The Bacolod City-native Sueno was dealt with lopsided scores from the three judges namely Somsri Bhusi (99-88), boxing writer Carlos Costa (100-87) and Sunet Khamchu (98-89).
Donsua imposed his presence almost the entire contest with his swarming attack on Sueno coupled by volume punches and straights that prevented the Filipino from launching his punches.
The Negrense fighter, however, also had his moments in the world title clash with his uppercut and shots to the body but his attacks were limited and mostly not enough to hurt the Thai.
It was a heartbreaking defeat for Sueno as he failed to score a follow up to his technical knockout win over Reymark Alicaba last April for the Philippine Boxing Federation flyweight belt.
The lopsided defeat to Donsua also denied the 28-year-old Sueno an opportunity to breach the top 15 in the world rankings in the highly-contested bantamweight division.
Overall, this was the Bacolodnon fighter’s fourth defeat in his last six matches since making a boxing comeback in 2022 after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Sueno, who was born in Sagay City in Negros Occidental, saw his boxing record dropped to 12 wins, eight losses and four draws. He has five victories by way of stoppages.
The 26-year-old Donsua, on the other hand, maintained his unbeaten record of 11-0-0, which includes three wins via knockouts.
“I must admit Ricardo was one of my toughest opponents to date so I am happy to score a convincing win against him,” said Donsua, who has fought mostly fellow Thai fighters prior to Sueno./PN
