MANILA – Bacolodnon guard Kirell Brahndon “Kib” Montalbo is all set for his professional basketball debut when the Talk ‘N Text (TNT) KaTropa clashes with Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters in the 2020 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum this afternoon.
The former De La Salle University Green Archers guard said that playing in the PBA is a dream coming true for him. He vowed to make most of the opportunity that was given to him by the KaTropa.
However, Montalbo is up for a tough competition for minutes in a loaded KaTropa backcourt that also features Jayson Castro, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Simon Enciso, Ryan Reyes, Almond Vosotros, Rodel de Leon and fellow rookie Valandre Chauca.
“It’s an unimaginable feeling to be drafted in the PBA but, to practice with veterans like Jason Castro is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Montalbo. “And since I’m already here, I’ll make the most out of it. I will always be ready to earn my spot on the team.”
For Kib’s father, Roger, he is overwhelmingly happy to see that his son finally made it to the big league.
“Of course I’m so proud of what he has achieved; especially that he finished his high school here in Bacolod City. But, he has to work his way in the rotation. He will play his role 101%, that’s for sure. But, the minutes aren’t given, it is earned. It won’t be easy. He has to work hard,” Roger said.
Prior to his move to Manila with the Green Archers, Montalbo spent his high school basketball with St. John’s Institute Baby Falcons in Bacolod City. He also had stints with the AMA Titans and Marinerong Pilipino in the PBA D-League and with the Makati Super Crunch in Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League./PN
