MANILA – With the departure of cagers Jeron Teng, Thomas Torres, Jason Perkins and Julian Sargent, Kirell Brahndon “Kib” Montalbo is being molded to become the De La Salle University Green Archers’ new leader in the upcoming UAAP season.
The Bacolod City, Negros Occidental-native Montalbo said he is more than ready to take up the role as the next “King Archer” as his team guns for back-to-back championships next year.
“Ngayon, they have been molding me, helping me to be a leader,” said Montalbo. “I feel I led the second group (last season). I’m starting to become La Salle’s leader and I’m ready for it.”
Aside from Montalbo, also expected to return for the Green Archers next season are Cameroonian import Benoit Mbala, Rashleigh Rivero, Abu Tratter, Aljun Melecio, and Andrei Caracut.
Montalbo, a former St. John’s Institute standout, became a vital cog for the Aldin Ayo-mentored team last season after returning from a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury last year.
“Akala ng iba na we didn’t work hard, automatic champion, pero it’s not that eh,” Montalbo said. “How you play as a team, yun yung importante. We showed it in our games good ball movement and playing for each other.”
“Sobrang sarap ng championship! We worked so hard!,” he added. “Forming our team to play for each other. Feels so good lang talaga. Hopefully we can continue it next season.”
The Green Archers completed its title-run with a two-game sweep over the Ateneo Blue Eagles. They also tallied a near-perfect 13-1 win-loss slate in the double-round eliminations./PN
