Badiangan teen arrested for unlicensed gun

BADIANGAN, Iloilo – Police apprehended an 18-year-old student for possession of an unlicensed firearm on the evening of November 18 in Barangay Poblacion.

The suspect, identified only as “Rik”, hails from Barangay Agusipan in this town.

Authorities recovered a .45 caliber pistol, a magazine, and four live cartridges during the operation.

When questioned, the suspect failed to present legal documentation for the firearm.

Brigadier General Jack Wanky, police director for Western Visayas, commended the vigilance of local police patrollers, which led to the arrest.

“To those in possession of unlicensed and undocumented firearms, surrender them to the nearest police unit in your area to avoid criminal liability,” said Wanky.

The suspect remains in police custody and faces charges for violating Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Illegal possession of firearms is a criminal offense with severe penalties:

* prison term – depending on the firearm’s classification, imprisonment ranges from six years to life imprisonment

* confiscation of the firearm

Unauthorized possession of ammunition, parts, or accessories is also punishable.

Under the law, individuals must obtain a License to Own and Possess Firearms (LTOPF) to legally own or possess a firearm.

The applicant must meet specific qualifications, including:

* being at least 21 years old

* passing a neuro-psychiatric test

* completing a gun safety seminar

* passing a drug test

* submitting clearances from the police, barangay, and court

* demonstrating legitimate purpose and proof of income to afford a firearm

All firearms must be registered with the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The registration includes details about the firearm, its owner, and the purpose for possession.

Carrying firearms outside of residence or a specific area without a Permit to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence (PTCFOR) is prohibited unless exempted./PN
