BACOLOD City – The city government of Bago in Negros Occidental gave a “heroes’ welcome” to the Bago City Junior League Softball team for winning the 2023 Junior League Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington on Aug. 5.
Representing the Asia-Pacific Region, they defeated the USA’s East Region, 3-0, in the 12–14 age category finals to bring home the Philippines’ second title in 20 years.
Pitcher Erica Arnaiz, who led the team with 85 strikeouts, said she was glad to be home and grateful for the grand welcome.
“We didn’t expect to become champions, but with God’s help, we did it,” she said.
The team, composed of players from Ramon Torres National High School (RTNHS), arrived at the Bacolod-Silay Airport on Aug. 18.
A motorcade took the team to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson for a courtesy call, then proceeded to Bago City for a press conference.
During the press conference, Bago City’s Mayor Nicholas Yulo announced the city would give the team incentives.
“With determination, hard work and dedication, softball has now become associated with our city,” Yulo added.
Head coach Francis Fuentes said he is thankful to bring the championship back to the Philippines after two decades and acknowledged the support of the city government.
“I thank their parents and families for their relentless suppor. The same goes to all Bagonhons who prayed for their success, especially the Filipino community in Washington who came out to support our team,” he said. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency)/PN
