BOXERS from Bago City, Negros Occidental showed their way in the PSC-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup 2018 Preliminaries Visayas at the Manuel Y. Torres Memorial Coliseum and Cultural Center in the city.
Kim Catedrilla, Rodel Gamo, Joshua Belicena, and Nel Tambanillo defeated their respective foes on Feb. 4 to secure slots to the Visayas quarterfinals in Naga City, Cebu on Feb. 24 to 25.
Tambanillo knocked out Calbayog’s Jovan Molleno while Gamo won over Mandaue’s Alex Andrei Bonita via unanimous decision. Belicena triumphed over Murcia’s Julius Salbibia via unanimous decision as Catedrilla defeated Sipalay City’s Rey Penafiel.
“Our victories in the preliminaries are a good start, and I am hoping that this will continue throughout the tournament,” said Bago City head coach Larry Semillano, a 1997 SEA Games gold medalist.
Sipalay City also had two qualified boxers – Nixon Anito and Jay Torela Jr., who both scored split-decision victories over Cres John Demafiles of La Carlota City and Escalante’s Rojean Sabordo, respectively.
Other qualifiers included Cadiz City’s Michael Adolfo and Mark Alob, Geniel Alit and Herlan Gomez of Victorias City, Kane Redondo of Salvador Benedico, Kent Perocho of Escalante City, Joenel Francisco of Murcia, and Renz Teves of Bayawan City.
Bago City has been dubbed the “Boxing Capital of the Philippines” after producing numerous Olympian boxers led by Atlanta Olympics silver medalist Mansueto Velasco and brother Roel, 1992 Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist./PN
