MANILA – The Bali Pure Water Defenders vented its ire on the Bureau of Customs Transformers as it scored a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 straight-set win in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference on Wednesday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
American reinforcement Katherine Morrell led the way with 17 points, on 15 attacks and two service aces, for the Water Defenders, which moved up to a 1-1 win-loss slate in the standings.
Angeline Gervacio and Amy Ahomiro added 10 markers each, while Suzanne Roces and Mary Tajima combined eight points for the Water Defenders, which bounced back from a four-set loss to league-leader University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.
Both teams went on a tight exchange early in the opening set with the Water Defenders holding on to a 16-14 lead. The Transformers responded to take a 19-17 lead but the game was knotted until errors by Alyssa Valdez gave the Water Defenders the set.
The Transformers jumped to an early lead in the second frame but the Water Defenders quickly answered back to surge to a 16-12 lead. After the Transformers came to within two, Gervacio and Ahomiro came up with hits to end the set for the Water Defenders.
From a tight start, the Water Defenders zoomed to a 16-13 lead in third set behind Morell and Gervacio. More hits from Gervacio widened the lead to 21-16 before Morell razed the finishing points for the Water Defenders.
Valdez, who scored a league-record 39 points a week ago, was held to just 16 points, while Thai import Kanjana Kuthaisong was limited to the same tally for the Transformers, which slid down to a 2-1 win-loss slate.
“We really prepared for Alyssa in this match,” said Water Defenders playing coach Charo Soriano. “We really worked on our defense since we know if we stop her, it will be easier for us to win.”/PN
