MANILA – Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV is seeking to pass an “ideal” and “effective” measure that would improve nutrition among Filipino children.
“Let’s put together a bill with all of our collective knowledge, collective experiences, and best practices,” said Aquino, author of Senate Bill No. (SBN) 694 or the Pagkaing Pinoy Para sa Batang Pinoy.
During the hearing on the proposed feeding programs, the departments of Education and Social Welfare, as well as other stakeholders were urged to ensure the success of the initiative.
Aimed at fighting child malnutrition, Aquino’s SBN 694 seeks to implement a feeding program for infants, public kindergarten and elementary pupils.
“It will promote the health of children who are most in need, by providing regular and free access to nutritious food within a safe and clean school and community environment,” he said.
To increase farmers’ income and address rural poverty, the bill proposes to utilize locally sourced and locally produced food products.
Aquino also said he will work to ensure the proposed feeding program receives enough allocation for its implementation.
“The government’s budget is indicative of its priority. If indeed this is our priority, we should be able to budget it better,” Aquino said./PN
