ILOILO – Criminal and administrative charges have been filed against the boat captain and owner of fishing boat DRAMS-MV that was caught using the forbidden Danish seine (hulbot-hulbot) in the municipal waters of Carles.
Boat captain Edwin Bacas of Barangay Libas, Roxas City and owner Jessie Tayo of Balud, Masbate were accused by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force of violation of sections 86 and 97 (unauthorized fishing and ban on the use of Danish seine) of Republic Act 10654 (The Philippine Fisheries Code) before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6 Adjudication Committee.
Bacas and his 20-men crew were caught using hulbot-hulbot 9.9 kilometers from the shoreline of Barangay Asluman, Carles on March 15 by the joint seaborne patrol operation of the Bantay Dagat and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6.
Their boat, including its engine and fishing paraphernalia, were seized by the task force for safe keeping.
The task force also recovered 20 tubs of assorted fishes which were distributed for the consumption of patients and inmates of Sara District Hospital and municipal police stations of Ajuy and Concepcion.
Bacas is currently detained at the municipal police station of Carles while his crew, who were not subject of the penal provisions of the law, were released yesterday. (Jezza Nepomoceno/PN)
