ILOILO City – “Anti-Zika packets” were distributed to the residents of Barangay Benedicto, Jaro district yesterday.
Each packet contained items against mosquito-borne infections such as mosquito nets and education materials.
A total of 100 packets were distributed to the barangay residents by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, chairperson of the Senate committee on health and demography.
She visited the barangay with the officials of the Department of Health Region 6 and City Health Office.
Barangay Benedicto has four cases of Zika virus infection. The first case for 2016 in the Philippines was discovered here.
Hontiveros also had a dialogue with local leaders and residents .
“Sa barangay nangyari, sa barangay ang solusyon,” Hontiveros emphasized.
The neophyte senator underscored the importance of harnessing the barangays in matters involving public health.
Just this Friday, DOH reported two new Zika cases in Makati and Mandaluyong cities in Metro Manila. These brought the number of Zika cases in the Philippines to 17, of which 12 were from Iloilo City and one from Iloilo province.
The senator urged the public to stay calm and for the government to heighten its response.
“The best response to the Zika virus is education and prevention. We must strengthen our information, detection and monitoring drive to prevent the further spread of the disease, and to provide immediate care to those infected with the virus,” Hontiveros said./PN
