ILOILO City – A barangay captain’s gun accidentally went off, killing him and wounding his seven-year-old son in Barangay Jelicuon Lusaya, Cabatuan, Iloilo yesterday, police said.
The 38-year-old Virgil Zuniega, village chief of Pacatin, Cabatuan, died at the Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital around 3:35 p.m.
His son was taken to the same hospital for a gunshot wound on the right leg.
The accidental discharge of Zuniega’s gun happened around 11:30 a.m., according to Chief Inspector Engelbert Banquillo, Cabatuan police chief.
The barangay captain was driving a motorcycle with his wife Ana and three children as back riders. They were on their way home from Barangay Sta. Rita, Maasin town.
The road in Barangay Jelicuon Lusaya was rough. The motorcycle fell down and this was when Zuniega’s .34 pistol – kept in a backpack – went off, said Banquillo
Zuniega’s wife and their two other children were unhurt.
“We believe this to be a case of accidental firing. We saw a bullet hole in the backpack and gun holster,” said Banquillo even if the barangay captain’s wife claimed someone fired shots at them./PN
