MANILA – All preparations for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections this year have been suspended.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) also ordered deferredall biddings and procurementsof election paraphernalia.
Comelec is only waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte to sign the bill postponing the elections, said spokesperson James Jimenez.
The Senate and the House of Representatives have approved on third and final reading their respective versions of the bill.
Both chambers agreed to move the elections from Oct. 31, 2016 to Oct. 27, 2017.
“We are now preparing for the barangay and SK elections in 2017,” said Jimenez. “Our field offices are gearing up for the resumption of the voters’ registration in October.”
He said the postponement is expected to allow five million more would-be voters to register.
Registration will resume this coming Oct. 3 and will last until April 29, 2017.
A total of 3,095,187 voters have registered for supposed elections in October./PN
