ILOILO City – The city government has increased the P2,000 monthly honoraria of barangay workers by P500.
Funds for this would come from the P158-million supplemental budget approved by Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) early this month.
“Our barangay-based workers are the ones who bring services to our constituents in the barangay level,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III who was the one who initiated the giving of honoraria to barangay workers when he was still a city councilor.
He was referring to Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Supplemental Feeding Workers, and Barangay Service Point Officers.
“I really want them to especially monitor the status of our senior citizens because I want the elderly to benefit from our programs. I do not want any of them to die because they have nothing to eat or have not availed themselves of our services,” Espinosa said.
Next year, the monthly honoraria could be further increased.
“I will take a look at our budget for next year. Barangay workers in other cities have higher incentives compared to us,” said Espinosa.
Supplemental feeding worker Annabelle Almanon of Barangay Infante, Molo district said the P500 increase would be a big help to her family.
“One of my children is in high school. I can use the money for my child’s allowance, expenses in our house and personal use,” said Almanon who has been working for 10 years as supplemental feeding worker. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta, Iloilo City PIO/PN)
