ILOILO City – A barbershop owner and his 3-year-old son had been shot to death in Barangay Cabantohan, Lemery, Iloilo.
Police were looking into past incidents in a bid to determine the motive and identify the suspects.
Resident Dexter Wayne Peñalosa died of gunshot wounds on the body. His son Khian sustained a gunshot wound in the head.
The father and son were attacked while bound for the municipality of Sara on board a motorcycle at around 8:35 a.m. on Monday, said Inspector Ariel Buenavista, Lemery police chief.
Armed men suddenly appeared when they passed by a sugarcane plantation, and repeatedly fired at them, initial police investigation showed.
The victims were taken to the Sara District Hospital where they expired.
Nine empty shells of M16 were recovered from the crime scene.
Peñalosa, who owns a barbershop in Sara, was detained 10 years ago as a suspect in the fatal shooting of an uncle. He was later after an amicable settlement, said Buenavista.
Other than this, Peñalosa did not have any other criminal record, Buenavista said.
The resident also reported to the Sara police station once, claiming someone was threatening him, but it was not clear at the time who, the police chief added./PN
