BACOLOD City – The onslaught of tropical storm “Basyang” on six areas in Negros Occidental has left total crop loss reaching some P8.417 million, according to the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA).
On Feb. 13, the province was placed under tropical storm warning signal No. 1 due to Basyang.
Based on OPA’s progress report covering the period Feb. 13 to 21, the worst typhoon-hit area was Bago City – dubbed as the rice bowl of Negros Occidental – with crop loss pegged at P4.254 million.
The loss affected 338 farmers of 411.1-hectare rice fields in 19 villages in Bago City.
San Carlos City followed with rice crop loss worth P1.89 million, affecting 175 farmers in five villages. High-value commercial crops worth P401,250 were also lost in the same area.
La Carlota City came in third with rice crop loss worth P859,432, followed by Moises Padilla with P779,935, Cadiz City with P174,032, and E.B. Magalona with P65,925.
OPA released these records on Thursday.
Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said field assessments are still ongoing in some affected areas.
Masculino reminded that farmers enrolled under the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance can file their indemnity claims.
Last month, two cities in Negros Occidental suffered the highest crop damage due to monsoon rain-triggered floods. They were the cities of Victorias (P2.28 million crop loss) and Cadiz (P1.43 million crop loss). (With PNA/PN)
