Philippine National Police chief Ronald Dela Rosa (pictured) “enjoys my trust and confidence,” says President Rodrigo Duterte.

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte is further extending the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa to sustain reforms in the PNP.

Dela Rosa was due for retirement on Jan. 21. Last December Duterte ordered him to stay for three more months, or until April.

But Duterte said Dela Rosa, who was “supposed to retire on the 24th of April,” will have to lead the police force for “a little bit longer” for “reforms to get hold.”

The President said Dela Rosa – his police chief when he was mayor of Davao City – “enjoys my trust and confidence.”

“So General Dela Rosa – he’s popularly called ‘Bato’ – will have an extended term,” Duterte said in a speech before the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce Phils., Inc.

He did not say until when Dela Rosa will occupy the PNP chief post.

The President pointed out the need to rid the police force of “scoundrels.”

“I am good with the Armed Forces but I still have to institute continuing reforms with the police,” said Duterte.

“And the police [have] always been a problem. But they are not that many. There are scoundrels, scalawags in every organization,” he added.

Dela Rosa, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class ’86, said he will abide by Duterte’s directive.

“’Di naman ako swapang na opisyal. Gusto ko rin makatikim sila sa pwesto na ito,” said Dela Rosa.

Pero, inasmuch as gusto ko silang pagbigyan, kung gusto ni Presidente na magpatuloy pa ako, ano’ng magagawa ko?” he said. “Si Presidente naman ang may gusto na magpatuloy ako sa aking trabaho.”

Dela Rosa promised to stay by the President’s side.

Hanggang sa dulo ng walang hangganan, hindi ko siya (Duterte) iiwanan,” he said. “Kung kinakailangan pa niya ang serbisyo ko, nandito lang ako.”/PN
