MANILA – Jorick Bautista converted a timely three-pointer as Far Eastern University Tamaraws scored a 65-58 win over National University Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With the Bulldogs threatening to within 58-61 after a conversion from PJ Palacielo, Bautista stepped up for the Tamaraws with a top of the key three-pointer to extend the Tamaraws’ lead to 64-58 with under a minute left.
After a missed three-point attempt from the Bulldogs’ Jolo Manansala, the Tamaraws sealed their second straight victory via a split free throw from rookie Veejay Pre with two seconds remaining.
Mo Konateh led the way for the Tamaraws with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Bautista and Pre added 17 and 12, respectively, as they improved to a 3-6 win-loss slate.
Manansala top-scored for the Bulldogs with 11 points, while Palacielo contributed 10 markers as they dropped to a 2-7 win-loss card.
Meanwhile, De La Salle University Green Archers displayed their experience in overtime to defeat the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 94-87.
After seeing their 20-point lead turned to an 80-all count after the regulation, the Green Archers opened the extension with a basket from Kevin Quiambao and free throws from Michael Phillips and Elaijah Gollena for an 87-81 lead.
The lead grew further for the Green Archers at 93-83 on conversions by Quiambao and Phillips. UST made their last push at 87-93 but a free throw by Phillips sealed the win for DLSU.
Quiambao led the way for the Green Archers with 29 points, Phillips added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Raven Gonzales contributed 11 as they remained on top with an 8-1 win-loss slate.
Nicael Cabanero had a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds, Rence Padrigao added 15 markers, while Mo Tounkara and Miguel Pangilinan and 14 and 10, respectively. They dropped to a 4-5 record./PN
