BACOLOD City – Militant groups under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) in Negros Island conducted yesterday a lakbayan to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the “Escalante Massacre.”

Bayan-Negros secretary-general Mike dela Concepcion said hundreds joined the lakbayan, starting from Sagay City and Toboso town to Escalante City.

The militant groups assembled at the public plaza of Escalante City followed by a symbolic torch parade and a solidarity night program.

A total of 20 farmers and peasants were killed by state forces during the Escalante Massacre, said dela Concepcion.

He added that today, the brutal murder will be reenacted in the same spot where it happened 33 years ago.

Commemorating the Escalante Massacre will spark vigilance among the masses, according to dela Concepcion.

He said the Duterte administration is leaning toward a dictatorial rule.

When this happens, farmers and peasants will be killed “under the guise of the war on terror,” dela Concepcion added./PN
