A BINIBINING Pilipinas candidate from Cebu has received a backlash from the religious community for wearing a national costume similar to that of the Santo Niño de Cebu.
Joy Dacoron posted on her Facebook and Instagram accounts photos of her donning the controversial costume that include a red cape, crown, scepter, and an orb.
The same photos were also posted on Tuesday evening on the pageant’s Facebook page but were later removed after comments from netizens who described it as blasphemous.
In her Instagram, Dacoron explained that the costume symbolizes the unwavering faith of people to the Holy Child Jesus.
Personally, she said the Santo Niño de Cebu was a source of inspiration and strength.
“When I lost my father to an accident last year, I questioned God: “Ngano man, Lord? (Why Lord?),” Dacoron said.
“The Santo Niño paved the way for me to shed my doubts and made me realize that everything happens for a reason. In gratitude, I am sharing this faith on the national stage,” she added.
“Thus, with pride and deep respect for our heritage, I wear this costume that signifies faith and gratefulness. Viva Pit Senyor!”
Dacoron said she also got permission from the Archdiocese of Cebu for the photo shoot.
But Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Ruben Labajo said Dacoron sought permission from him but only to shoot in churches as background.
“I have no idea that they will promote the vestments of the Holy Child as national costume, and especially the Augustinian priests also did not know about it,” Labajo said in a statement sent to reporters yesterday.
Fe Mantuhac-Barino, chairperson of the Archdiocese of Cebu’s commission on the laity, said “creativity should be guided by the Holy Spirit so the true beauty of God’s creation will come out.”
She added, “It is important to respect culture and religion.” (newsinfo.inquirer.net)
