BACOLOD City – The city government gave a P30,000 incentive to a Bacolod City College (BCC) graduate who ranked ninth in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) – Elementary Level given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in September last year.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia led the awarding of cash incentive and a plaque of recognition to Ma. Fatima Ofracio during the testimonial dinner for 74 BCC LET passers in the March 2016 and September 2016 examinations, at the Bacolod City Government Center lobby on March 3.
Ofracio, 21, obtained a general average of 86.40, making her No. 9 among the 77,466 LET elementary graduate examinees in the March 2016 exams, of which only 23,378 passed.
Leonardia, who also sits as chairman of the Board of Trustees of BCC, told Ofracio: “Thank you very much for making us so proud.”
Ofracio, who hails from Barangay Punta Taytay, graduated cum laude from BCC-Taculing Campus in September 2016, with the degree Bachelor of Elementary Education major in General Education.
Her mother, Maria Catalina Ofracio, is a barangay health worker in Punta Taytay.
The mayor also addressed the LET passers saying, “When you go out into the real world, please see to it that you continue to excel.”
Ofracio thanked the city and school officials.
“Thank you for your undying support to this institution. Thank you for making Bacolod City College a school that provides quality education to poor but deserving students of Bacolod City. Through this, thousands of dreams were made into reality and thousands of lives were changed,” she said.
The giving of cash incentive to BCC LET topnotchers is provided for under the Teacher Education Award and Recognition Program signed by the BCC Board of Trustees and approved by Leonardia this year.
The PRC and Board of Professional Teachers also separately gave certificates of recognition to Ofracio in previous ceremonies.
Another achievement for BCC celebrated at Friday’s testimonial dinner was its distinction conferred by the PRC as the No. 10 among the Top 10 Performing Schools in the LET – Elementary Level all over the country, according to BCC college administrator Ma. Johanna Ann Bayoneta.
BCC was the only school in Negros Occidental offering Teacher Education courses included in the said ranking, Bayoneta said.
The BCC administration also gave Leonardia a certificate of appreciation. BCC was founded by Leonardia in 1997 during his first term as mayor. Now he is on his 5th term.
“I am very proud of Ofracio’s achievement, and I’ve always considered BCC as my flagship project because I know the future of our children hinges on their degrees. And it makes me even prouder that while we have the cheapest tuition at only P30 per unit, we can give them ‘cheap but quality education,’” Leonardia said.
Bayoneta said BCC has started offering Education courses in 2002, and this is now the second time that they have produced a topnotcher.
In 2008, BCC BSED Math major Jason Azuelo of Barangay Bata was 14th placer in the LET-Secondary Level./PN
