ILOILO City – Going out of town this Holy Week?

The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) issued several travel safety tips especially for those bringing their own vehicles.

* Make sure the vehicle is in good condition. Check the following: battery, light, oil, water, brakes, air, gas, engine, tire, and self.
* Make sure all the vehicle’s papers are complete. Bring them.
* Avoid “one-hand driving.” The driver must have control of the vehicle at all times.

* The vehicle’s door must be locked especially when there are children inside.
* Avoid using the cellphone (calling or texting) when driving.
* Bring an extra driver especially when going to faraway areas.

* Avoid driving when drunk, suffering from dizziness or feeling sleepy.
* If traveling at night, make sure the headlights, signal lights and tail lights are functioning.
The PRO-6 is on full alert status and ready for the influx of people, said Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director.

He said those traveling must secure their houses before leaving to avoid being victimized by akyat bahay (robbers).

Policemen are securing vital installations, too, such as power stations, oil depots and transport terminals to deter criminal activities, he stressed.

There will be random checkpoints and Gentiles tapped the help of barangay peacekeeping action teams.

Regular law enforcement operations will continue, he added, such as manhunt of wanted persons, the serving of search/arrest warrants on loose firearms and illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, director of the Iloilo City Police Office, said 467 police personnel have been deployed to areas of convergence.

He also said the cops will conduct random inspection of people for illegal drugs and deadly weapons.

The Iloilo Police Provincial Office, on the other hand, has established 155 assistance desks in priority areas – churches, municipal plazas, beach resorts (from Oton to San Joaquin towns) and tourist attractions.

IPPO spokesperson Chief Inspector Aron Palomo said other priority areas are the “Way of the Cross” in Alimodian, Iloilo and “Taltal” in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo – two of the most visited places in the province during Holy Week.

He urged people to avoid carrying deadly weapons. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
