STARTING today, Oct. 1, until Friday next week, Oct. 8, those interested to seek public office will file their certificates of candidacy for the 2022 elections. Multitudes are expected to pack Commission on Elections offices across the country. With supporters in tow plus gimmicks to drum up their election bids, it will be a spectacle.
The filing of certificates of candidacy signals the start of the political season. We will be talking and hearing about politics until it is time to cast votes.
People will be watching things unfold and perhaps start scrutinizing the candidates. Who will get their votes? Who are deserving of election?
People have around eight months to decide whom to support and reject. It would be interesting to see who will be the next leaders of this country in general, and towns, cities and provinces in particular.
The electoral exercise is democracy in action. For one day every election year, the people are at their most powerful. Politicians are at their mercy. Literally. For the 2022 elections, that day is on May 9.
For now, the public must be watchful and discerning.
Will the voters make good choices? That is the biggest and scariest question of all.
