BACOLOD City – The P300-million beautification of the Bacolod public plaza and the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) grounds will kick off this month.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez on Monday, February 3, said the project is funded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) of the Department of Tourism (DOT).
“Eighty million is allocated for the plaza’s fountains and lighting and upgrading of comfort rooms, and P220 million for the fountain in BCGC,” Mayor Benitez said.
He added: “By December, we will have a beautiful public plaza. We hope it will regain its status as a prime destination in the city.”
The city mayor also said that they will regulate vendors at the public plaza after the project’s completion.
In September last year, the city government had intensified efforts to regulate activities at the public plaza, with a focus on removing illegal vendors and addressing the presence of homeless.
Public Order and Safety Office POSO head Primitivo Tabujara said they targeted illegal vendors and manicurists operating without identification cards issued by the city.
He said only vendors with proper IDs are allowed to sell at the plaza, but they are prohibited from staying overnight in their designated areas./PN
