MANILA – San Miguel Beermen hardly broke a sweat as it handily defeated Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, 109-82, in Game 1 of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven finals last night at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Reigning PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo and Chris Ross led the way with 17 points apiece for the Beermen, which is aiming for its third straight All-Filipino Conference championship.
Alex Cabagnot and Gabriel Espinas chipped in with 16 markers each, while Ilonggo Ronald Tubid, Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter combined for 28 points for the Beermen.
The Beermen zoomed to a 21-4 start in the game on triples by Cabagnot and Lassiter. The lead grew further as Santos and Brian Heruela joined the scoring fray for a 35-11 advantage.
The Kings had consecutive points to start the second frame to come to within 20 points but the Beermen had a quick response on back-to-back triples by Tubid and inside hits by Fajardo and Santos for a 60-39 halftime lead.
The Beermen continued its dominance in the second half with hits from Fajardo, Santos, Ross, and Cabagnot to push the lead to its largest at 85-49 on a five straight points by Espinas.
The 27-point Game 1 victory of the Beermen was the most lopsided finals series opener since the Beermen defeated the Alaska Aces, 108-78, in Game 1 of the 2015 PBA Governor’s Cup finale.
Chris Ellis top-scored with 13 points, while Mark Caguioa and Jervy Cruz added 12 markers apiece for the Kings, which is hoping to score a follow up to its 2016 PBA Governor’s Cup reign./PN
