MANILA – Barring any last minute changes, the Blackwater Elite is set to select Rey Mark “Mac” Belo as its top-overall pick in the special selection for Gilas Pilipinas members in the 2016 PBA Rookie Draft today at Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.
Belo, who led the Far Eastern University Tamaraws to the UAAP Season 78 crown, is one of the “most PBA-ready” among the 12 applicants, according to Elite head coach Leo Isaac.
“Sa mga applicants, especially sa Gilas Pilipinas team, si Mark ang masasabi kong gagawa ng immediate impact sa PBA,” said Isaac on Belo, who impressed PBA scouts by topping the standing and maximum vertical leap during the Draft Combine.
Phoenix Fuel Masters, who owns the second pick, will likely go for Matthew Wright, while the newly-crowned PBA champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings plans to enlist Kevin Ferrer.
Next in line are the Mahindra Enforcer, Star Hotshots, San Miguel Beermen, Meralco Bolts, NLEX Road Warriors, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Alaska Aces, Global Port Batang Pier, and TNT Katropa.
Other prospects for the special Gilas draft are Russel Escoto, Jiovani Jalalon, Arnold Van Opstal, Roger Pogoy, Eduardo Daquioag, Mike Tolomia, Alfonso Gotladera, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Von Pessumal.
The other version of the draft, which will follow shortly after the Gilas Pilipinas players special draft, will involve the 41 “regular rookie players” where the Elite also owns the top-overall pick.
It will be followed by the Fuel Masters, Kings, Enforcers, Hotshots, Beermen, Bolts, Road Warriors, Painters, Kings, Aces and Fuel Masters. Katropa and Batang Pier have no draft rights in the first round.
