HOW would you like to use condoms as kids’ birthday party balloons? They come in different colors. Some are flavored and some are even perfumed.

How would you react when you see your 12- or 14-year-oldadolescent scrutinizing or licking a colored, flavored condom or your son or grandson trying to find out if his penis fits in a condom?

I was trained under the United Nations Fund for Population for one summer in Marikina, Rizal many years back. That was a very good exposure: we were taught different techniques in family planning such as natural, mechanical, chemical, and surgical. We discussed issues and controversies, and different religious leaders from different sects spoke on the pros and cons of birth control. Euphemistically, it is termed as Population Education or POP-ED. We finished the training and went back to our respective posts with tons of books and reading materials in preparation for making POP-Ed mandatory.

Schools failed. Population has kept increasing. Now we are more than one hundred million in the Philippines. Now, the number of HIV cases has become alarming, unwanted pregnancies and premarital sex are ordinary happenings. Look at the lovers. Sometimes it’s as if they are trying to swallow each other in the park, in the school in the campus, in the jeepneys, in private cars and even in the church. They are oblivious to the people around them.

The Church, in its stand to uphold morality, has been criticized as the villain in opposing “liberality” or promiscuity. So the bright minds proposed to CONDOMIZE those 18 years old up.  But wait! Have you heard about cigarette vendors, movie houses, motels and houses of ill-repute strictly demanding for identification cards from customers?

If schools start condomizing our young today, we are just encouraging them promiscuity, teenpregnancies and the eventual total disrespect of the sanctity of marriage and of life. Condomizingmenlikewise encourage infidelity or fornication.

Is copulation purely for sexual pleasure? It is not. It is an intimate communication between a husband and a wife. One husband claimed, “When I use condom, I feel I am taking a bath in the rain with the raincoat on.”

The world changes. We call it progress, progressive mind or liberal-mindedness. Human positive law may change drastically but natural law remains the same. The law is written in the hearts and minds of human beings. Now the burden is on the shoulder of a few good men and women: priests, ministers, teachers, and parents to teach what is morally upright and just and according to His will. It is not easy, but if the philosopher Socrates said, “Know thyself,” today, we are urged to adopt a method within our power, “NO thyself.”

Condomizing the youth is a desperate attempt to check problems in sex without respect to its sacredness, the value of marital vows (joke?) and the future generation. Flavored, colored condoms for free or buy-one-take-one from the drugstore, from your priests or ministers or from your teachers. Toy of damnation, anyone?
