BFAR urges LGUs in WV to protect ‘lupo’ fingerlings

ROXAS City – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) encouraged all local government units (LGUs) surrounding the Visayan Sea to enact ordinances protecting the fingerlings of sardinella or lupoy and lilang, during the open season.

BFAR regional director Remia Aparri said this during the ceremonial declaration of the resumption of fishing season for sardines, herrings and mackerels in the Visayan Sea on Feb. 18 in Estancia , Iloilo.

The regulation will allow sardinella reach the right size for harvesting even after the implementation of the closed season, added Aparri.

She also said the constant campaign against illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in the Visayan Sea will protect the growth of sardines, herrings and mackerel population beyond the closed season.

BFAR has declared a three-month closed season for the conservation of concerned fish species in a portion of Visayan Sea from Nov. 15 to Feb. 15 each year through Fisheries Administrative Order 167 – 3. (PIA/PN)
