BACOLOD City – This city’s Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) will kick off Fire Prevention Month today, March 1, reminding the public that fire safety begins with education.

With the theme “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!”, an opening program at 2 p.m. at Ayala Malls Capitol Central will be graced by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez.

According to BFP-Bacolod City, the theme highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in homes and schools, among others.

March is declared as Fire Prevention Month under Proclamation 115-A signed by former President Ferdinand Marcos in 1966 to promote safety consciousness.

Fie Superintendent Jenny Mae Masip, the city fire marshal, said prior to the commencement of the month-long observance, they conducted early awareness and education campaign around the city to help prevent wildfires, residential fires, and other similar incidents.

“The campaign promotes safety measures and ensures preparedness before peak fire season begins,” Masip said.

On Thursday, February 27, the Granada Fire Sub-station also held a fire safety symposium at a resort in Barangay Alangilan.

The activity, in partnership with the Lifesaver and Hotline Team of Barangay Villamonte, showcased a proactive approach to safety by sharing awareness of potential fire hazards, proper response in case of fire, and identifying emergency exits and evacuation routes, proper use of fire extinguishers, emphasis of the importance of swift and orderly evacuation procedures.

At present, BFP-Bacolod City said there are 284 red zones or fire prone areas in various barangays in the city./PN
