MANILA – A Senate bill seeks to create a body that will address suicide incidents among the youth.
The National Youth Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council shall identify youth suicide early intervention, prevention and response strategies, stated Senate Bill No. 1163 filed by Joel Villanueva.
A total of 2,558 suicide cases were reported in the Philippines in 2012, according to the World Health Organization, but Villanueva believes the numbers were underreported due to stigma associated with suicidal behavior.
“Poor understanding of the dynamics of suicide and its risk factors limit the capacity of families and communities to provide early intervention and prevent suicide among the youth,” said the senator.
“These also hinder [them] from extending appropriate response to adverse behaviors related to suicide,” he added.
Under the bill, the Department of Health shall establish a 24/7 hotline to provide assistance to youth at risk of suicide.
The council shall also provide grants to eligible entities tasked to undertake its strategies./PN
