BACOLOD City – The city council has good news for patients with kidney disease.

Members of the city council approved a resolution requesting Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya to legislate a bill creating a pilot program to improve early detection of kidney diseases, care for kidney patients, and give solution to the long waitlist for kidney donors in accordance with the Living Kidney Donor Protection Act.

Councilor Ricardo Tan, author of the resolution, said June is the National Kidney Month by virtue of Presidential Decree 184 issued by former president Fidel V. Ramos.

The celebration, themed “Wastong Pangangatawan … Sakit sa Bato Kayang Maiwasan,” is headed by the National Kidney Transplant Inc. (NKTI).

As part of this year’s celebration, NKTI will be having a nationwide campaign to create health awareness specifically focusing on reducing the cases of kidney diseases and its complications, Tan added.

Local government units must enhance the program for early detection of chronic kidney disease and should encourage organ donation to help those in need, he said.

Gasataya, for his part, said he is yet to receive the copy of the resolution./PN
