MANILA – The carrying capacity of Boracay must be identified first before the famed island resort reopens in October, according to Sen. Nancy Binay.
Binay, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, assigned the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) the job during Monday’s Senate hearing on the island’s degradation.
“Ako, siguro, bago natin pag-usapan ‘yung pagbubukas, pag-usapan muna natin yung carrying capacity ng Boracay. Because kung hanggang ngayon hind pa rin natin alam kung ilan ang kaya ng isla, paano natin mapag-uusapan kung kailan bubuksan ang Boracay,” Binay said.
She added that she was informed that the study on Boracay’s carrying capacity will be ready “hopefully by August.”
Binay also suggested the creation of an office “kung saan sa kwarto na ‘yon may table si DENR, DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government), local government unit, at saka DOT (Department of Tourism).”
“Days before isara hanggang isara na nga, parang may problema sa communication between the government and those affected by the closure,” stressed Binay./PN
