MANILA — Vice President Jejomar Binay will respond today to the issues surrounding the allegedly overpriced Makati City car park building.

Binay, former mayor of Makati, will answer all the allegations hurled against him and his family at 2 p.m. at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, his office said.

A former Makati official had claimed during previous Senate investigations that the bidding for the construction of the building had been rigged.

Engr. Mario Hechanova, former head of the city’s General Services Department, said that then mayor Binay favored contractors.

Hechanova said he would get a monthly allowance of P200,000 to manipulate biddings.

Former vice mayor Ernesto Bondal, on the other hand, claimed that Binay received 13-percent kickbacks for every infrastructure project in Makati.

Binay got as much as P10 million as kickbacks, Bondal said, adding that he would personally bring labeled bags of kickbacks to Binay and his son, former councilor and now Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay.

Binay on Aug. 27 said their family became a subject of malicious prosecution because he remains the leading presidential candidate in the 2016 election.

He insisted that the construction of the car park building had undergone “stringent” assessment and process as prescribed under the General Procurement Act./PN
