MANILA – Sen. Nancy Binay said she was “sympathetic” with Sen. Leila de Lima.
Some of the accusations against de Lima were “below the belt,” Binay stressed.
Binay was referring to the plan to use an alleged sex video de Lima had taken with her former driver and bodyguard in the investigation against her.
“Kung tutuusin, ano naman ang pakialam natin sa love life niya?” said Binay.
President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies accused de Lima of receiving money from convicted drug lords in the New Bilibid Prison.
They also blamed de Lima, a former Justice secretary, for the alleged proliferation of drugs in the national penitentiary.
Moreover, Duterte accused her of having an illicit relationship with her married driver.
De Lima has repeatedly denied having taken the sex video. She also said she was “hurt” by the personal attacks being leveled against her.
“Pinagdaanan din namin ang pinagdadaanan niya ngayon,” said Binay. “Sana iyong pinagdaanan namin hindi na pagdaanan ng ibang tao, including her.”
She was referring to the yearlong Senate investigation on the corruption allegedly committed by her father, former vice president Jejomar Binay, and their family.
Binay said she approached de Lima after the latter’s ouster as Senate committee on justice and human rights chairwoman.
“After ng privilege speech (niya), nilapitan ko siya. Sinabihan ko siya na lilipas din iyan, based on our experience,” said Binay./PN
