BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia said he will support the proposed waste-to-energy technology if the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will approve it.
During the national board meeting of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) yesterday at the SMX Convention Center here, PCL national president and Ilocos Sur councilor Luis “Chavit” Singson said they have passed a resolution to implement waste-to-energy technology.
Singson explained that the proposal is meant to answer the growing problem of most local government units (LGU) on the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Leonardia, for his part, said the proposal should be environmentally acceptable, citing that there are only a few LGUs in the country that are operating sanitary landfills and implementing waste-segregation policies.
“If it can be proven to be not harmful to the environment, then good,” Leonardia added.
The waste-to-energy plant, according to Singson, is based from a European technology and will be a gasification-type plant with zero smoke emission.
Meanwhile, hotels in this city are now fully booked because of the PCL convention which is being attended by 1,285 delegates.
Based on the information sent by Councilor Em Ang to the City Public Information Office, all hotels, including inns and pension houses, were fully booked as of 10:30 a.m. yesterday./PN
