ILOILO City – Births and in-migration were among factors causing population increase in Iloilo province, according to the Provincial Population Office.
Actual population count in the province rose to 2,069,873 in 2017 from 2,040,859 in 2016 and 2,018,947 in 2015.
Majority of the 2017 population were males. Oton was the most populous the municipality, PPO data showed.
Barangay Service Point Officers and other volunteers gathered these among other data from the 42 towns and the component city of Passi that make up the province, said PPO head Ramon Yee.
Of the 2017 population, 1,046,284 were males and 1,023,589 were females.
Making up the top 10 most populous local governments were:
* Oton – 94,381
* Passi City – 90,266
* Lambunao – 81,232
* Pototan – 78,750
* Carles – 74,719
* Dumangas – 74,043
* Miagao – 71,180
* Janiuay – 69,008
* Tigbauan – 66,993
* Santa Barbara – 62,420
Moreover, total households last year reached 447,012, up from 439,194 in 2016 and 433,229 in 2015, PPO data showed.
Births were one of the factors that led to the additional 29,014 people in the province, said Yee. “There were more births than deaths in recent years.”
Another was in-migration, defined as the movement into a region or community, especially as part of a large-scale and continuing movement of population.
“Many people from other places came to live in Iloilo province for various reasons,” Yee said in Hiligaynon.
“They may have found a spouse or opportunities to work or study here, or maybe they just found the province peaceful,” he added.
The number of people coming into Iloilo was greater than the number of those who leave to find opportunities elsewhere, Yee added./PN
