ILOILO City – “We are happy to do our part. We are happy to do our share. And we will continue to do [so].”
This was the assurance made by businessman Dr. Alfonso Uy of Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation (PFMC) on behalf of the top taxpayers in this city during the Top Taxpayers Awarding Ceremony at Grand Xing Hotel here on Friday, Aug. 25.
The PFMC was one of those recognized by the city government for exemplary contribution to the development of the city. The recognition of top taxpayers was one of the highlights of the city’s 86th Charter Day celebration on Friday.
Uy expressed his gratitude to the city government for recognizing the business sector.
He lauded the leadership of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, who gets the full support of the city council and former Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon, for making Iloilo City what it is today.
“Iloilo city is gaining a lot of attention from the business community not only in Iloilo but everywhere. In Manila, when I meet people they ask about Iloilo and tell me that when they visit Iloilo after a long absence, Iloilo has become different,” Uy shared.
As the then chair of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (ILED), Uy recalled that back in 2007 or 15 years ago, this southern city was facing enormous obstacles to economic development. Among these were the problems with electricity and water supply, which were both very essential for economic developmental.
He added: “Thanks to the cooperation between the public and the private sectors, we were able to identify and suggest solutions to solve the problem.”
With the huge investment in power generation, electricity problem was resolved and even brought enormous contribution to the city’s tax revenue, he cited.
Another one is the Jalaur River Multi-purpose Project (JRMP) Stage II, which is expected to be operational by 2025. It is projected to ensure water supply not only to the city but also to the surrounding municpalities.
“Senator Drilon and our city mayor are instrumental in bringing this project to realization,” he added.
Uy said he cited the two projects to emphasize the importance of business and investment to the city’s growth.
He noted that now, the city government, and the business sector and civic organizations are together building a vibrant and liveable city.
“The city has cultural activities, clean and green environment, peaceful and safety, and these in turn will attract investments that ultimately benefit everyone living here. To achieve this, as mentioned, tax revenue is very, very important, he further stressed.
Treñas, for his part, reiterated the city’s appreciation to the business sector for its enormous share in transforming Iloilo City into a progressive one. He stressed that taxes help realize projects, programs and services for the benefit of the residents.
