ILOILO City – Four jail guards of the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo were relieved from their posts following a woman drug suspect’s claim that she got her shabu supply from inmates there.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region 6 will be investigating the four jail guards, too, but Jail Superintendent Gilbert Peremne declined to name them for now.
Peremne is the BJMP-6 assistant director for administration and operation. He said the relief of the four jail guards took effect on May 9.
The guards will be identified when the probe is over and the results are made public, said Peremne.
The IDJ warden’s fate, on the other hand, will depend on the result of the investigation, said Peremne.
Senior Inspector Abner Zamora, the warden, had been on the defensive since last week following the arrest of three women drug pushing suspects one of whom claimed their supplier was an IDJ inmate. He denied reports that detainee Ken Mark Pineda was giving instructions to the women.
The just this Saturday, another arrested drug suspect, the 42-year-old Josefina Doctora of Barangay Poblacion Ilaya, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, claimed her shabu supply came from IDJ, too, and specifically from two inmates she identified as Pakloy Alarba and Marko dela Cruz.
“I don’t believe Doctora got her shabu from inside the jail. We’re very thorough in frisking visitors,” said Zamora.
But Zamora’s words were not enough for the BJMP-6. Permne said the bureau is addressing the concern raised by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 6 recently that arrested drug suspects continue their illegal activities even while in detention.
According to PDEA-6 director Gil Pabilona, jails appeared to be the “weakest link” in the war against illegal drugs. From their cells, detained drug personalities continue to direct the operation of their minions outside, he said.
He specifically named the Iloilo City District Jail – Male Dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district but said this modus was being practiced not only in that prison facility but in other jails being managed by BJMP./PN
