BORACAY ISLAND – Beachgoers and swimmers here in the popular beach destination are reminded of the potential dangers of bluebottle jellyfish.

In an advisory, the Malay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) said the bluebottles are being washed onshore on Puka beach and the eastern coast of the Island by strong winds, and are stranded in the shoreline.

The alert was issued since the beaches of Boracay Island have been packed with foreigners and locals in the onset of summer season.

Don’t walk on it, don’t pick it up or you will be stung. The burning sting of creatures causes nausea, severe headache, vomiting, pain in the chest, muscles and abdomen including joints to the victim.

If stung by a bluebottle, carefully remove the tentacles attached to the sting by using a dry towel, apply ice pack or wrapped ice or warm water in the affected area for 20 minutes.  Do not apply vinegar that might cause discomfort or fresh water that will activate the stingers.

Seek medical assistance if the symptoms persist in large area or across the face and throat.

The blue jellyfish known for their transparent bluish appearance live in huge numbers in tropical waters. It had trailing tentacles and a keel-like crest like a sail. (Akean Forum/PN)
