ILOILO – Provincial Board member Demy Sonza launched his new book, Two Most Highly Decorated Filipino Soldiers in World War II – Jose C. Calugas and Ramon S. Subejano of Iloilo.

Tuesday’s launching was held at Casa Real de Iloilo in cooperation with the provincial government’s Office of Culture, Arts, History and Tourism.

Calugas hailed from the town of Leon while Subejano was from New Lucena.

Calugas was a member of the Philippine Scout of the US Army during World War II and he received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle of Bataan.

Subejano, on the other hand, was a decorated US World War II veteran. He had the distinction of earning 17 medals, one of which was the Silver Star which cited him for “Gallantry in Action on Dec. 7, 1944 in the vicinity of Dillingen, Germany.”

Sonza noted that the two Ilonggo soldiers maybe unknown in Iloilo and the entire country but they were very popular in the United States.

Sonza had written a number of books on local history that helped enrich Ilonggo cultural and historical knowledge.

He donated his new book to the Iloilo provincial government as an act of gratitude to the institution which helped in his personal and professional development.

Sonza started as a provincial government employee before he was catapulted to elective positions.

The book can be bought at the Office of Culture, Arts, History and Tourism, Iloilo provincial capitol for P250. (Capitol News/PN)
