BORACAY – Clearing operations to pave the way for road construction and rehabilitation in this famed island resort are being fast-tracked this month.

The clearing operations must be completed before the “massive” rehabilitation begins.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), 92 percent of the 1.46-kilometer stretch between Cagban port and Rotanda is already workable.

About 70 percent of the 3.8-kilometer stretch between Rotanda and Mount Luho junction is also workable as of May 17, the DPWH added.

The construction and rehabilitation works are aimed at improving road safety in Boracay.

Since the island closed on April 26, the DPWH has demolished 234 structure within the 12-meter road right of way.

Next week, the Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) will start relocating its electric posts and lines affected by the clearing operations.

The DPWH has teamed with some 320 volunteers from the provincial government in clearing temporary and permanent structures along the 5.3-kilometer road sections from Barangay Manoc-Manoc to Barangay Balabag.

It also mobilized 150 workers who use heavy equipment for the clearing operations.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development will hire 8,000 individuals under its cash-for-work program. They will be tasked to plants trees, demolish illegal structures, clear debris, and de-clog drainages in the island for 30 days. (With a report from Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
