Boracay dominates Cabuyao in PSL Dumper Cup

MANILA – Boracay Islanders rode on a strong start to wallop Bagong Cabuyao Homelab Nation, 95-79, in the 2022-2023 Philippine Super League Dumper Cup on Monday night at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Jaymar Gimpayan was hailed as the WinZir Super Player of the Game with his double-double 12 points and 15 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals as the Islanders notched back-to-back wins for a 9-5 win-loss slate.

Genmar Bragais led the way for the Islanders with 15 points, two rebounds and one steal, while Johnsherick Estrada contributed 14 markers along with four assists and a rebound.

The Islanders were engaged in a tight battle with Cabuyao in the opening quarter as they cling to a 21-14 lead before pulling away in the second quarter for a 58-39 halftime lead.

Cabuyao had their mini runs in the third period as they were behind 57-77 after three quarters before threatening further in the fourth period but only managed to cut the deficit to as low as 16 points.

Mark Bitoy top-scored with 19 points, Joel Jolangcob added 15 markers, while Nano Alvarado and Crispin Barnedo had 10 points each as Cabuyao dropped to 2-12 slate.

The Islanders will close out their elimination round games against league-leading San Juan Kings (13-0) at four in the afternoon this Saturday, March 11, at the same venue.

In other results, Justine Baltazar made his PSL return as he steered home team Pampanga Giant Lanterns (9-5) to a close 78-70 victory over Santa Rosa City Laguna Lions (10-4).

Baltazar, who came from a failed stint in Japan B.League and Korean Basketball League, tallied double-double 14 points and 20 rebounds to go with two assists and two blocks for the Giant Lanterns.

Quezon City Beacons (5-9), on the other hand, scored a 97-96 escape over Cagayan de Oro (3-12). Tricky Peromingan had 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds to lead the Beacons.
