BORACAY – The Sangguniang Bayan of Malay, Aklan is keen on approving the proposal to increase electric tricycle (e-trike) fare in Boracay Island.

Sangguniang Bayan member Dante Pagsuguiron said the riding public in Boracay expects better services from the imminent increase of the fare.

A transport cooperative in the island requested for a P5 increase from a minimum fare of P10 to help e-trike drivers withstand the effects of pandemic. Senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students will still be granted fare discount.

Pagsuguiron said the fare adjustment will encourage the drivers to give better service to commuters.

“Sana mapakinggan ng mga e-trike drivers ang hinaing ng mga commuters at maisaayos ang kanilang serbisyo,” the councilor added.

Penalties are also imposed to erring drivers for non-conveyance of passengers for whatever reason as the Municipal Transportation Office continues to intensify its campaign against shady drivers violating traffic laws.

Despite the campaign, there are still ‘opportunistic’ drivers looking to take advantage of their passengers.

Pagsuguiron said about 80 percent of e-trike drivers are transient workforce in the island.

“Kailangan may disiplina ang ating mga drivers dahil ang imahe ng Boracay ang nakasalalay dit,” he stressed.

Aside from e-trikes, air-conditioned Hop-on Hop-off shuttle buses of Southwest Tours using beep cards are also operating in Boracay Island./PN
