BORACAY – A fire broke out in a residential area here, leaving 21 families homeless before dusk on June 2.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Boracay substation received the fire call at 5:38 p.m. Fire trucks and fire volunteer groups responded to the fire scene in Sitio Cabanbanan, Barangay Manocmanoc.

The houses were made of light materials, thus the fire spread easily, according to BFP-Boracay.

Eleven houses totally went up in flames, while five houses were partially destroyed.

The fire was placed under control at 6:24 p.m. and a fire out was declared at 7:36 p.m.

Arson investigator Fire Officer 3 Melvin Porras said initial damage to property was placed at P225,000. No firefighters were injured in the blaze, the BFP added.

Fire trucks of the Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers, Fairways and Bluewater Boracay, Savoy Hotel Boracay and water trucks of the Boracay Water and Boracay Tubi System, Inc. also helped in putting out the fire.

The displaced fire victims were brought to Manocmanoc covered court, their temporary shelter after the fire incident.

The BFP investigation on the origin of the fire is still ongoing but witnesses believed the fire started from a two-storey boardinghouse.

BFP has so far recorded five fire incidents this year in Boracay Island./PN
