BORACAY – Gasoline-fueled tricycles will soon be phased out in this famed island resort. They will be replaced with electric ones, the local government said.
Drivers and operators who have yet to get electric tricycles, or e-trikes, have until Aug. 30 to buy units from accredited suppliers.
By May 31, tricycle hire permits for gasoline-fueled tricycles will be cancelled. These “old” tricycles will be removed from the roads of Boracay by June.
“Colorum” tricycles plying some routes in the island will also be cracked down and be removed from the streets before September.
Under the Municipal Traffic Code, e-trike operators must first secure a franchise from the Municipal Tricycle Franchising and Regulatory Board before operating.
Mayor Ceciron Cawaling said using e-trikes will decongest traffic and lessen carbon footprint in the world-renowned island.
Currently, there are 250 battery-powered e-trikes plying routes in Boracay, three years after the transport modernization program began. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
