Boracay ‘trike’ drivers seek fare hike amid pandemic

KALIBO, Aklan – With no stable source of daily income to feed their families, some 3,000 tricycle drivers and operators in this capital town who are reeling the effects of coronavirus pandemic sought for a tricycle fare increase. 

The tricycle drivers and operators in 16 barangays of Kalibo appealed for tricycle fare adjustment to compensate for losses and to sustain their basic needs.

Johnny Damian, president of Federation of Kalibo Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association Inc. (FOKTODAI), said the transport groups and leaders were consulted of the provisional fare before it was approved by the Sangguniang Bayan.  

Dahil dalawa ang maaaring sumakay sa trisikel ngayon, nag-apela tayo na dagdagan ang pamasahe dahil na rin sa pandemya,” he added.

The new tricycle fare is P10 within Poblacion Kalibo and P15 from Poblacion to SSS office, Gaisano Capital, Unitop (Jaime Cardinal Sin Avenue, Capitol Site) and Eastern Terminal outside of Poblacion. 

Passengers  will be charged P20 from terminals to Andagao proper while P25 from Sitio Proper Bakhaw Norte to Poblacion Kalibo and Kalibo Public Market and P30 from Sitio Karomahan Bakhaw Norte to Poblacion and Kalibo Public Market.

The tricycle fare from Briones to Kalibo vice versa is P35 while passengers from Bakhaw Sur to Poblacion terminal up to Hanging Bridge 2 will pay P20.  

The increase in tricycle fare is also set to take effect in following barangays:

* Caano – from Caano to Kalibo P20 and from Caano Terminal to Caano P40

* Nalook – going to Poblacion P20 and from Poblacion going to Nalook P50

* Mabilo – interior portion going to Poblacion P25; national road going to Poblacion P20 and from Mabilo terminal to Mabilo Proper P50

* Pook – PATODA terminal to Pook Proper P30; from terminal to Tugbungan Pook P40; from Pook to Poblacion proper P10; from terminal to Kalibo-Bayanihan, Mahabang Bantud and Baybay P30; from Poblacion to Talipapa  P20 and from Pook to Poblacion P15

* Mobo – Centro to and from Poblacion P20; Punta Ilaya/Punta Ilawod to and from   Poblacion P30 and Masangya/Bakueod to and from Poblacion P25

* Tinigaw – from Tinigaw terminal to Tinigaw proper P30; Tinigaw going to Poblacion P20 and from Tinigaw terminal to interior Tinigaw P35

* Linabuan Norte – terminal to Kalibo proper to Linabuan  Norte  P30 and alighting to interior areas P40

Tigayon – highway proper to Poblacion P30; interior roads to Poblacion P35 and Tigayon terminal to Tipakea P40

* Estancia – boundary of Tigayon from Poblacion and going to Tigayon terminal P25 and interior roads from Poblacion P30

* Old Buswang – along the provincial road going to Kalibo P15 and all sitios not along provincial road going to Kalibo P20

* New Buswang  – from New Buswang terminal to Bakhawan and Villa Peraz P25; from New Buswang terminal to Buswang villages and sitios P20 and from Baybay, Tapo Tapo, Mercedes Village and Magdalena Village to New Buswang terminal P10

* Damian also reminded the tricycle drivers that senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students are entitled for 20 percent discounts on fares. 

Tricycle drivers are also required to comply with health and safety protocols like wearing of protective facial mask and regularly sanitizing the tricycle units. (With a report from Akean Forum/PN
