IF YOU happen to be a Speech Communication student, I am pretty sure you will be familiar with Levels of Communication.
The Levels of Communication are the following: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Small Group, Public, and Mass Communication. In one way or another, I am sure you have experienced these types of communication in your day-to-day lives.
Intrapersonal comes from the root word “intra”, meaning “within.” Intrapersonal communication means communication within one self.
We normally engage in this kind of communication when we talk to ourselves, when we daydream, when we reflect, among others. Experts said that when we talk to ourselves, we are healthy people.
In this kind of communication, we are given a chance to get in touch with our past and plan our future. A speech communication student is advised to write in a journal. Aside from practicing his skills in writing, writing in a journal sometimes enable a person to know himself better. If you know yourself better and you do not have inhibitions, you will be confident to speak in front of many people.
Interpersonal, on the other hand, is communication with other people. “Inter” comes from the Latin prefix which means “between”, “among”, “in the midst of.” Simply put, this kind of communication occurs between the sender and the receiver.
In this kind of communication, you establish relationship with other people. You learn about other people. You are able to share yourself to others. Interpersonal communication allows us to make friends and create connections among others.
Under Interpersonal Communication is dyadic communication. Dyadic means “group of two.” There are three forms of dyadic communication. These are conversation, dialogue, and interview.
On the other hand, Small Group Communication occurs when you share information with three to 15 people, with the purpose of arriving at a decision or help resolve a problem.
According to DeVito, there are four major types of small groups. These are problem-solving group, idea generation group, personal growth group, and educational or learning group.
An example of a problem solving group is the neighborhood association. The officers of this organization decide to solve problems such as garbage disposal, water treatment facility, etc.
On the other hand, an example of idea generation group is, for example in a TV station, the writers. They brainstorm to come up with a new concept for a teleserye. Writers meet and suggest ideas that the audience will appreciate.
Marriage encounter group is an example of a personal growth group. According to Agravante, et al., this kind of group meet to help raise consciousness of self and of others by formulating and verbalizing their thoughts and feelings about a particular topic, listening to what others have to say or what they have done about the same topic, and asking and answering questions about aspects of the topic that are not understood.
A study group is an example of educational or learning group. When students gather to discuss topics pertaining to their examinations then they are considered to be a part of an educational or learning group.
Another level of communication is Public Communication. In this kind of communication, there is a speaker and there is an audience. The speaker shares information relevant to the topic being discussed. Examples of this are seminar workshops, debates, forum, among others. A candidate in an election, for example, convinces the voters to elect him through a speech delivered to the crowd of electorates.
The last level of communication is Mass Communication. In this kind of level, the information is shared not only to one, two or hundreds but thousands even millions of audience. Examples of this are the tri-media (radio, TV, newspaper). Internet and social media are also included in this level. Hence, content in this kind of level should be well thought because mass communication has the power to shape opinions.
The levels of communication help us to differentiate the kind of situations we engage in every day. As source of information, we must always remember to make sure that we are clear of our purpose. Hence, by being clear of our purpose, we are avoiding conflicts and miscommunication./PN
