IF YOU ARE an AB Communication student, probably you can’t wait to reach your Junior year. It is because it is in the Junior year when production classes are mostly offered.

When I was in college, I can’t wait to sit in my production classes. I have been dreaming of this day since I was kid. So when I finally reached my Junior year, I made sure I gave all my best in all our class activities.

Sadly, during my time, the focus of my program was on radio and not television. To compensate for this, I enrolled in summer classes. I took up Film Production and Basic Acting. I also requested my mom if I could apply in a TV network in Manila for my internship; she was very supportive of my plan.

Now students are very lucky; their curriculum is shaped to meet the demands of the fast-changing media environment. One of the subjects offered in Communication schools is TV Production. Before you could actually produce your very own teleserye, you must first know the basics of audio-video production. This is what I am going to share today.

Framing and composition basics are composed of shot, scene and sequence. Shot refers to the smallest unit of the visual narrative while scene is composed of a series of shots and sequence is composed of a series of scenes.

Moreover, there are four framing elements. These are shot size, angle of the shot, camera movement, and compositional style. We will discuss them one by one.

Shot size refers to the dimension of the screen border that contains actors, props, etc. The examples are establishing shot, long shot, close up, extreme close up, medium shot. You need to master the basics fist before you can combine other variations such as two-shot-medium shot, and others.

Shot angle, on the other hand, is described as the incline or perspective taken by the cameraman when shooting a subject. Examples of shot angles are bird’s eye view, worm’s eye view, eye level, point of view and canted angle. Bird’s eye view is also called high angle and worm’s eye is the low angle.

Currently, one of the equipment utilized by videographers is the drone. The drone is used to produce high angle shots. It could show an island from the vantage point of the sky. You can bring a drone anywhere. It is expensive but then it is worth the investment.

Camera movement, on the other hand, differentiates video from still photography.  I will discuss more the physical movement. This is composed of pan, tilt, dolly, and tracking. Pan refers to moving the camera from left to right or vice versa. Tilt, on the other hand, is moving the camera from up to down and vice versa. Dolly refers to moving forward or backward. Tracking ,on the other hand, follows the subject as it moves.

Knowledge of these concepts will help the students produce an audio-video production. In my experience as a teacher of production subjects, students need to undergo as many activities as possible. This will train their skills and will sharpen their minds and improve their creativity.

Lecture classes help but practical exercises are the most remembered by students. Students enjoy executing the knowledge they learned from their professor. During this process, it is advised that the professor be there to guide the students. He should critique the outputs of the students so that they will know their mistakes and they could correct it.

In my opinion, the professor should not detach himself from the process. It is okay to allow the students to explore but the teacher should be there to share his expertise during the evaluation of the outputs.

TV Production is a an exciting subject. This article discussed only the beginning, there are more topics under this subject and I am willing to share this in my future articles. /PN
