ILOILO – A seven-year-old boy died after he was ran over by a public utility jeepney (PUJ) in front of their house in Barangay Jayubo, Lambunao town at around 1:06 p.m. on Sunday, March 16.
According to the Lambunao Municipal Police Station, the child was crossing the road with his nine-year-old older sibling after attending a wake nearby.
When they saw the approaching jeepney, the older sibling stepped back but the younger child continued crossing and was hit.
PUJ driver alias “Efren”, 56, a resident of the town’s Barangay Bagongbong, was on its way to the terminal with passengers on board.
Police said the driver failed to stop in time, resulting in the accident.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to severe head injuries.
Following the accident, bystanders and the victim’s relatives ganged up on and attacked the driver, causing injuries that required medical attention. Efren is currently under hospital arrest at Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City./PN
